Nokia announced last year that it would exclusively produce Windows Phone handsets in a bid to reinvent its smartphone presence, which had suffered harshly since the rise of Apple and Samsung. While the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 Windows Phone 7 handsets enjoyed a large amount of success when they were released earlier in the year, they have since seen a huge sales slump due to the announcement by Microsoft that Windows Phone 7 devices would not be upgraded to Windows Phone 8.

Why Buy Lumia?

Many people are thinking, if the newer version of Windows Phone is going to be released next month, why would I buy a Lumia phone now that will not be updated? It is a valid cause for concern and one which has no doubt angered Nokia as they attempt to rescue their company from the brink of bankruptcy.

Windows Phone 8 will introduce some long awaited new features that will patch up some of the biggest complaints levelled against Windows Phone to date.

Storage Space

One complaint has been that Windows Phone have always come with a limited amount of on-board storage with no option to expand it with memory cards. The iPhone famously does not come with memory expansion either, but while the latest iPhone comes in a 64GB version, the majority of Windows Phone handsets have been limited to just 16GB internal memory. Windows Phone 8 will address this problem by adding support for microSD, although this is no guarantee that every Windows Phone 8 handset will have a microSD slot.

Multicores

Windows Phone has also, undeservedly, received criticism for not being featured on any multicore phones. Dual core processors were introduced on Android devices at the start of 2011, with the Motorola Atrix and LG Optimus 2X being some of the first dual core phones released. Later in that same year, Apple also joined the dual core market with the iPhone 4S. But while Android has now moved to quad core with phones such as the Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, and it is widely assumed that this year’s iPhone 5 will also feature a quad-core chip, Windows Phone is still stuck on single cores.

In reality this is not as big of a deal as it is made out to be. Android phones require multicores because the operating system is quite inefficient and power hungry. Windows Phone may have not had multicores because it was unable to support them, but it also did not have them because it did not need them. Windows Phone 7 worked just as smoothly and efficiently on a single core device as Android does on a quad-core phone.

Windows Phone 8 not only adds support for multicores, but it adds support for a potential 64 processor cores. We are unlikely to see a Windows Phone (or any phone) with this many processor cores for quite a few years yet, but this support will set up Windows Phone nicely for the future.

Sharper Screen Resolutions

Windows Phone 8 will also support multiple screen resolutions and increase the maximum screen resolution to XVGA (720p). While this is certainly a great improvement over Windows Phone 7 it is still somewhat limited and short-sighted, especially considering HTC is already planning a phone with a 1080p resolution.

No details about the upcoming Nokia WP8 phones have been released yet. It is quite likely it will be another Lumia, and could quite possibly resemble the Lumia 800 and 900 in its physical design. Expect all of the new Windows features, along with excellent Nokia Maps and perhaps even a 41 megapixel PureView camera? Nokia has previously stated that it would bring this camera technology to its Windows Phones. Whether it will do so next month remains to be seen.
